Description

What is Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV)?

Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV):

  • Evaluates fluid flow with velocity outputs that can be used to find stresses.
  • Uses lasers to illuminate particles in flow.
  • Uses a camera to capture image sequences for analysis.

What has been done

The previous capstone team created a PIV setup, but without the flow loop. Preliminary tests were used as a proof of concept for the laser and camera setup.

Goals for the future

  • Incorporate a PIV setup into the BDL benchtop flow model.
  • Test medical products on different phantoms with a flow system.
  • Study how the flow behaves around these products.

Incorporating this system into the Bioengineering Devices Lab (BDL) benchtop flow model will allow further analysis while testing medical products such as catheters and during clot aspiration studies.
