ARSA Hosting Services
The Academic and Research Systems Administration (ARSA) team can provide some web and database hosting services to faculty, staff and students.
No FERPA, HIPAA, personally identifiable, or other high-risk data may be stored here.
Database Hosting
- ARSA can provide MariaDB 10 or PostgreSQL 10 databases.
- Access will be available via standard clients as well as phpMyAdmin and phpPgAdmin.
- ARSA databases are intended for project or personal use. For mission critical production databases, please put in a request for the DBA Team via the Solution Center.
To request a database, or to inform ARSA of any ownership or access changes, please call the ITS Service Desk at 928-523-3335 or open a Service Now ticket including the following information:
- If the database is for personal use or used in conjunction with another project or web application.
- If for a project or web application, the name of the project (note that all project database names will have "_p" appended to the name).
- Database owner
- Optional list of additional users who should have access to this database
- Approximate database size and how much it is expected to grow over time.
- Expected lifespan of the database, in years, for non-personal databases. Personal-use databases will exist until the person is no longer affiliated with NAU or has requested the database's removal.
Website Hosting
- Student personal websites are hosted via Google services at NAU. Please see https://in.nau.edu/its/google/.
- Faculty and Staff personal sites may be hosted by ARSA with a URL of https://ac.nau.edu/users/abc123 and https://ac.nau.edu/~abc123.
- Departmental, facility, project or other non-personal sites will be hosted at https://ac.nau.edu.
- The webserver runs Apache and supports HTML and PHP websites.
- Websites must conform to applicable NAU policies found here: https://nau.edu/university-policy-library/information-technology/.
- Custom web application hosting may be available depending on the languages and technologies required. Contact ARSA for more information.
To request a website, or to inform ARSA of any ownership or access changes, please call the ITS Service Desk at 928-523-3335 or open a Service Now ticket including the following information:
- If the website is a personal site or for other use.
- If the site will use Wordpress.
- Approximate amount of space on disk the site is expected to use.
- Expected lifespan of the site, in years, for non-personal sites. Personal sites will exist until the person is no longer affiliated with NAU or has requested the site's removal.
- If for a non-personal site, the name and a brief description of the site.
- If requesting information on hosting a custom web Application, please provide as much detail relating to what would be required to host the site as possible.
While we will do our best to provide any requested environment for custom applications, we may not be able to support everything. Please contact ARSA before committing to a project.
Capstone Development Servers
If the Capstone project is intended to be used beyond the students' graduation date, the faculty or staff member who will be maintaining the application should make the hosting request as described above.
ARSA is also able to provide Capstone groups with a temporary server to develop and demo their Capstone projects. This is not for the website requirement for all Capstone classes.
- Capstone servers will be deleted at the end of the Spring semester unless other arrangements have been made in advance.
- While we will not be able to provide the Capstone group root access to the server, we will make every effort to ensure they have sufficient access to complete their project.
- Websites must conform to applicable NAU policies found here: https://nau.edu/university-policy-library/information-technology/.
- Capstone servers will be built on RHEL8.
- Software requests will be assumed to be open source. If paid software is required, please contact ARSA. All licensing must be adhered to.
- While all software requests will be considered, there is no guarantee we will be able to provide specific software or specific versions. Be sure to contact ARSA with a software list before commiting to anything particular.
- Keep in mind that custom servers may require significant time to set up, depending on the requested requirements. Custom servers should be requested as early as possible and no later than the end of the Fall semester.
- While ARSA will make every effort to ensure the custom server is available, due to the nature of these projects, we can make no guarantee of service availability.
To request a Capstone Development Server, please call the ITS Service Desk at 928-523-3335 or open a Service Now ticket including the following information:
- Briefly describe your project, what it does or will be used for, etc.
- Who is your Capstone faculty sponsor?
- How much space on disk does your site take?
- What specific software will you require?
