J.J.S. Consulting
Design of Wildlife Refuge Pond for the Colorado River Indian Reservation
Project Details
Map of Arizona showing location of Colorado River Indian Reservation
C.R.I.T. wishes to develop a wildlife refuge pond in what is currently a borrow pit.
The borrow pit is paralleled by a canal which will supply water into the pond.
The pond will drain back into the canal thus providing a flow through system.
This will keep water from becoming stagnant in the pond. In order to achieve
this goal, J.J.S. Consulting has proposed to conduct a field survey of the
site in order to get accurate contour lines. We will then design the contours
of the bottom of the pond and the banks. This design of the pond will include the following:
Embankments around the ponds outside edge to minimize erosion
Shelves around the inside edges of the pond to promote plant growth
A deeper trench in the middle to provide multiple layers of depth for fish
Some small islands disbursed throughout the pond to increase habitat for waterfowl
After achieving an acceptable design for the pond, we will then do an analysis of the earthwork.
This will allow us to know approximately how much dirt will be left over for use on building up
the road that separates the pond. The road almost perfectly bisects the borrow pit into a
north and south end. We will simultaneously be designing a culvert to put under that road.
We will also determine inflow and outflow rates of the pond so that in the future inlet and
outlet structures can de designed for the pond.
