Welcome back STUDENTS!!! We can't wait for a great semester!

Machine Shop Hours: In order to accomodate the times that the capstone students are available, the shop will be open 11am-8pm Mon/Wed, 9am-6pm Tues/Thurs/Fri, and 9am-2pm on Saturdays. We hope see more Capstone Projects here at the shop this semester.

Cabinets/Work Tables: If you need a cabinet to store and/or a table in the shop to work on your project then any of the shop managers will be able to help you. Some of the cabinets have electronic keypads (for which you will be given the key code) and some require a combination lock (which must be bought by the student and the combo given to the machine shop for safety purposes). Table and Cabinet assignments are on a first come first served.

Advanced Shop Training: At this time we will not be offering Advanced Shop Training. It is still in discussion, however.

Safety Training: For the first 2 weeks of classes Safety Training will be reserved for students in Dr. Tester's Advanced CAD/CAM course (MW: 11am, TThF: 9am). Safety training will be open for everyone else the 3rd week of school. Note: If you can not make those times then you can email Derek (drp225) to set up an appointment. At the start of the semester we will have the students come to the shop to sign up for a training slot (~30min - 1hr); eventually, we will move to an online sign-up process so be on the look out for that!

Going on week 6 here at NAU’s Engineering Fabrication Shop, many labs are currently utilizing the facility and numerous projects are in the works. This first semesters allows engineering students to get familiar with the shop and engage in general shop training to ensure safety and proper use of the equipment. If you have not done so already, we strongly encourage those who will be using the shop to stop by and sign up for the training. We hope to see you, and if you have any questions regarding the tools or machines, please don’t hesitate to ask.

May 11 2016: End of the semester
This has been a very successful semester for the shop! Over the course of the semester, 977 students signed into the shop to work on projects for 2363 hours, mostly for capstone projects. The shop managers completed 71 work orders in support of the capstone projects. All the data on the use of the shop has been compiled into a more detailed report that can be found here.

April 29 2016: Finals Week Information
The machine shop will be open through May 6, the end of reading week. The shop will be closed the weekend of May 7-8. During finals week, the shop will be open by appointment only. If you need to schedule time in the shop during that week, please contact Heather.

March 9 2016: Spring Break Hours
The machine shop will be open for spring break! From Saturday March 12 through Sunday March 20 the shop will be open from 10am to 5pm. The schedule is here. There will still be safety training on Saturdays and Sundays. This is a great time to work on capstone projects!

March 4 2016: Photo gallery
We now have a photo gallery on the website. It features pictures of various machinery in operation and available project spaces. More pictures will be coming soon!

February 8 2016: Capstones and shop use
Capstone projects are picking up! Below shows a histogram of the number of sign-ins in three time intervals for each day of the week. The average time spent in the shop per sign-in ranges from about 1 hour on Mondays to about 4 hours on Saturdays. Please keep this and our hours in mind if you are in a capstone that needs extra space, as you will need a shop manager to supervise.

Work orders may also be needed by capstones. Work order information can be found here. Please note that you must have your technical advisor sign off on any work order parts. Part drawings need to have all dimensions and tolerances shown so that we can make your part accurately. If you have a part that will need to be made using a CNC mill, please email the solidworks file as well.

If you have any questions or concerns, just ask! You can stop by the shop or email, and a shop manager will help.

February 1 2016: Work Orders!
We are able to take work orders. For more information, check out our work orders page. If you have questions about the work order process, or questions about manufacturing your project, please come see us. We're here to help!

We've also logged in student sign-ins so far this semester to show you shop use so far this semester. Check out the plots below!

January 15 2016: Machine Shop Opens Jan 19
The machine shop will open for the spring semester on Tuesday, January 19. We will be closed on Jan 18 in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Our schedule for the spring semester can be found here, and information for safety training can be found here.

We had a very successful fall semester in the shop. Using the sign-in sheets, we were able to see how busy the shop was during the semester by day of the week. We're planning to do the same thing this semester, so check back to see what the shop use is like in the spring!
